The 2026 Trifecta system answers that demand with a complete redesign built around a simple idea: progress should be visible, structured, and earned through real work. It recognizes that many have yet to begin their Trifecta journey and encourages them with new ways to do that, while rewarding and motivating others who are already years into it in all-new ways.
“We’ve always seen people treat the Trifecta like a long-term contract with themselves. If someone keeps showing up, year after year, we want to give them something that respects that effort.” says Spartan CEO and founder Joe De Sena
This is the most comprehensive evolution the Trifecta has ever seen, built on the new 2026 Hex architecture, redesigned medal bases, and a long-term progression path that makes every accomplishment clear.
A Platform Built On HEX
The foundation of the 2026 system is the Hex: a removable, collectible piece that snaps magnetically into the center of every finisher medal (including Tough Mudder, DEKA, Trail and more). Spartan created this structure to unify medals across all brands while giving people a way to build and customize to their personal journey as their athletic achievements grow. Instead of a medal being a single fixed piece, the Hex system turns it into a platform. Hexes can be inserted, swapped and displayed. Special hexes can be earned and chased worldwide. Spartan, Trail, DEKA, Tough Mudder and Extreme Endurance all use the same geometry, each with its own identity.
Finally, A X1 Trifecta Medal
The X1 Trifecta Medal marks the first major step in the new structure. The front features three slots for the Sprint, Super and Beast hexes earned during the 2026 season. When those are in place, the racer has completed their first Trifecta for the year, and perhaps - ever.
A fourth slot on the back holds the new Trifecta Weekend coin, awarded to athletes who complete all three races in a single weekend. That achievement now integrates directly into the Trifecta system rather than existing as a separate medal. It can also hold a special custom hex, like a collectible venue hex which can be acquired at Spartan merchandise.
The X1 Medal creates the foundation for everything that follows, and it’s the first chapter in any long-term Trifecta record.
A Clear Progression: MULTI-YEAR Trifecta Bases
The most significant change for 2026 is the introduction of a structured progression through four medal base sizes. Each one captures a stretch of the athlete’s Trifecta history.
7-inch base (earned at X2):
Racers fill this base with finisher hexes from X2 through X5, receiving a dedicated X5 hex once they complete their fifth Trifecta.
8-inch base (earned at X6):
This next base carries you from X6 through X10. The X10 milestone hex marks the end of that phase.
9-inch base (earned at X11):
From X11 to X15, racers fill the 9-inch base. The X15 hex becomes the centerpiece.
10-inch base (earned at X16):
The largest base in the system supports the journey from X16 to X20. At X20, racers earn the X20 hex. When they reach X21, they begin a new 10-inch base, complete it through X25, and continue in this pattern for higher totals.
This system is structured, straightforward and scalable. It allows Spartans to showcase the entire arc of their achievements.
The Lifetime Ring: A Single Mark That Grows With Time
Above all the bases and coins sits one of the simplest, strongest elements in the redesign: the Lifetime Trifecta Ring.
The ring is a precision metal hex frame that clips around the center coin of any Multi-Trifecta medal. Each ring corresponds to a lifetime tier, starting at 2X and rising through major milestones like 5X, 10X, 20X, 50X, 75X, 100X and all the way to 250X.
When a person reaches a new tier, they replace the ring. One element that evolves with the athlete, not a series of oversized awards.
In Joe’s words: “When you hit the next level, you swap the ring. That’s it. Just proof.”
A System Designed For True Spartans
The 2026 Trifecta structure supports the habits Spartan athletes already live and train by year-round. Many chase multiple events in a season, and many keep coming back because doing hard sh*% matters to them.
The new progression gives that commitment a showcase. Hexes tie individual events to the system. Medal bases organize multi-year achievement. Milestone hexes make progress unmistakable. The Lifetime Ring carries the whole story in one place.
The 2026 Trifecta isn’t just a new look, it’s a long-term system. It’s a progression that keeps pushing toward new challenges, and new heights of unbreakable grit. It’s a platform that grows with every Spartan as they push toward their next finish line
