The ancient Greeks were revolutionary in many ways, one of which being gamifying and continuously testing the limits of fitness. But the original Spartans didn't measure fitness by how much they could bench press or how lean they could get in three months. Fitness, for them, was about survival, which meant being the most efficient when it came to everyday functional movements like squatting, pushing, pulling, carrying, and jumping. Today, we continue to test those same functional variables at DEKA FIT events across the country.
DEKA FIT is a modern fitness competition featuring 10 zones of functional fitness — from lunges to farmer carries to sled push/pulls — and separated by 500 meters of running for a total of just over 3 miles run. The zones are designed to require little-to-no prior fitness experience, and once you earn your DEKA Mark at your first event, that score serves as a benchmark to compare your future fitness gains to and see how far you've progressed.
There are now five heat types to choose from, including the classic Open Heat (for all levels of fitness), Age Group Heats, gated Elite Heats (winners of which are eligible for a cash prize), Teams Divisions (which can be broken into Male, Female, and Co-Ed Heats), and DEKA FIT Ruck Heats (bring your own weighted backpack or ruck).
If you're reading to start holding yourself accountable this year and making real progress, here's every DEKA FIT event that's happening across the U.S. in 2023.
