There’s no better feeling than the high you get from crushing a tough workout. That’s why we collaborated with our Spartan Master Coaches Gabe Snow, Evan Betts, and Trevor Franklin for a special series of workouts on the Spartan FIT app that we’re calling 20% Tougher. Now, these workouts are tough, but that doesn’t mean impossible. In fact, anyone can do them — beginner to advanced — it just comes down to whether you’re up for the challenge!

Evan increases the length of work (or exercise) intervals over the course of 4 rounds, Trevor follows a similar structure (but over the course of 2 circuits) and includes a 60-second finisher. As for Gabe, he’ll challenge you with his signature time under tension methodology. 

Tougher to Break With Evan Betts

Tough Workouts

Being tougher to break takes a strong base. This 20-minute lower-body focused workout with Coach Evan is a series of four exercises completed for four rounds each. Each round will be about 20 percent more challenging than the previous round via time or rep increase. There will be minimal rest (or up to 30 seconds, if you need it) between rounds to challenge the cardiorespiratory system.

Tough Workouts

Faster doesn’t always necessarily mean tougher. In this 20-minute full body workout with Coach Gabe, you'll perform a series of circuits to build strength by focusing on time under tension, or slowing the movements down. This is the secret to building strength with light weights or bodyweight movements.

Circuit 1: 2 Rounds 

Round 1 — 30 seconds per exercise 

Round 2 — 45 seconds per exercise   

— Goblet split squat (3-second eccentric) 

— Strict overhead press (3-second eccentric) 

— Reverse lunge to overhead press 

— Goblet squat (3-second eccentric)  

— Single-arm gorilla row (3-second eccentric)

Tough Workouts

Being tougher to beat takes symmetry and balance. Pair a lower body workout with this 20-minute upper body workout with Coach Evan. Similar to Evan’s Tougher to Break workout, this one is also a series of four exercises completed for four rounds each. Each round will be about 20 percent more challenging than the previous round via time or rep increase. There will be minimal rest (or up to 30 seconds, if you need it) between rounds to challenge the cardiorespiratory system.

Tough Workouts

This one covers it all and more. In this 20-minute full body workout with Coach Trevor you'll perform a series of two circuits: one will be 45 seconds of work with 15 seconds of rest and the other will be 60 seconds of work with 15 seconds of rest. The workout finishes with a 60-second burpee challenge.

Toughness starts here: at the core. This 20-minute workout with Coach Evan follows the same structure as his Tougher to Break and Tougher to Beat workouts, but this time squarely focused on the core. It’s a series of 4 exercises completed for 4 rounds each. Each round will be about 20% more challenging than the previous round via time or rep increase. There will be minimal rest (or up to 30 seconds, if you need it) between rounds to challenge the cardiorespiratory system.
