Success leaves clues. When I hear lessons from successful people, there are common themes and one of those common themes is getting comfortable being uncomfortable. Growth comes from being uncomfortable and declaring war on the comfort zone.
Get Out of the Comfort Zone
- Steer clear of the comfort zone: Going through a tough times empowers you mentally and physically.
- Struggle reveals AND builds our character.
- Challenges are opportunities for you to grow.
- Write down something that opposes your comfort zone (morning workouts, waking up early, packing a healthy lunch) and then DO the very thing that opposes your comfort zone!
In times of hardship, you find out what you're made of and what you're capable of. If you're never tested, you'll never define your character.
If you're never tested, you'll never define your character. This sounds like a Spartan living the dream, but the truth is that if we're always comfortable, we don't grow. Nothing grows, whether that's with your health, your fitness, your career, the long drive to work that you once thought was an impediment. Now you use it to develop your character, to learn more, to get stronger from it. The rain that's outside and you keep saying yourself, I'll just go and do my run. When it's not raining, then you go through that run through the rain or the cold weather and you feel empowered. You feel powerful. The lesson here is that instead of avoiding the tough times, we've got to remember that struggle develops strength and that struggle develops our character. It builds character, or as Joe De Sena loves to say, it reveals our character.
So here's your action for today: Write something down that's keeping you in your comfort zone and then destroy your comfort zone by doing the very thing that opposes your comfort zone.
