Tri-State New Jersey Beast

Spartan Race and mountainous terrain go hand-in-hand. Luckily, for Spartans of the Northeast there’s Mountain Creek -- home to the largest ski mountain in New Jersey. As with any mountain course, you’re guaranteed to see it all: peaks and valleys, slopes and climbs, ropes and walls, Spartan Kids and Spartan Pros. Discover what it means to be a Spartan and meet others as you battle toward one common goal: the finish line. As is par for mountain courses, you’ll be sent up and down -- a lot -- thankfully there’s the reward of a view from the outstanding heights. Come prepared for the unexpected in the weather department… mountain weather is notoriously unpredictable. Spartans always come prepared. If this if your first time on a Spartan Race course don’t underestimate how long you’ll be out there. Be sure to bring enough to fuel you through the course. Some things are certain: there will be rope climbs, there will be barbed wire, and there will be heavy carries. No one likes 30 burpees and that’s why it’s wise to train hard, train well and be prepared to conquer each and every obstacle. TOP REASONS TO TAKE ON THIS COURSE: 1. Vernon Peak has 1,040 feet of vertical, with a base of 440 feet and a summit elevation of 1,480 feet with plenty of room to go up and then back down countless times. 2. Treat yourself to some extra time to sleep in by staying onsite at Mountain Creek. The Appalachian and Black Creek Sanctuary are both good options. 3. Looking for some craft beer and craft food for your post race delight? Check out Eddie’s Roadhouse nearby in Warwick, NJ. 4. Still looking for more action? You can get another kind of adrenaline rush at Zoom Ziplines. 5. Enjoy organic foods at the local craft store: Heaven Hill Farm, a popular stop for hikers of the Appalachian Trail.

Distance: 12+ miles
Obstacles: 30-35

Terrain: From steep inclines to rocky, single/wide track descents, Mountain Creek is a ski mountain with steep terrain and we plan to use it to it’s maximum potential! That means a great deal of elevation change from start to finish. Due to the extended winter in the Northeast, there will be a great deal of snow covering over 90% of the course. Plan accordingly!
Avg. temperature: High 64, Low 40
Avg. rainfall: 3.80”
Elevation: 4500 ft
Avg. finish time: 5+ hours
Fastest finish time: 3 hours
Special gear needed: We highly recommend that all athletes carry a headlamp and their own water supply in a camelback, or other type of pack.  All racers scheduled to run in a wave after 1pm must have a headlamp or be with other racers that have a light source on them.  Race Officials reserve the right to remove racers without headlamps from the course if necessary.
Course Cutoffs: There will be 3 course cutoffs on Saturday, 4:00pm at mile 4, 6:30pm at mile 8.5, and 7:30pm at mile 10.5.  Racers not reaching the mile markers below may be removed from course for their own safety.

Start Time: 7:30am

Waves of 250 athletes will be released every 15 minutes across 3 groups (Elite, Morning, Afternoon).

Racers: If you want to race for a prize, show up for the elite heat.

BUILD A TEAM: Strength comes in numbers.

Callout your friends, co-workers and loved ones to get off the couch and into the mud.

Whether they’re helping you over the wall or chasing you up the mountain, make sure they’re with you at the starting line.

Teams can be any size but must have at least 4 members to be included in the team rankings.

TEAM REGISTRATION

The best way to ensure that you are starting at the exact same start time as your friends is to create a Team during registration (or have your friends Join your team!).

Any racers that are registered as part of a team, on the SAME DAY in the SAME TIME BLOCK (Elite vs. Morning vs. Afternoon), will be moved to the common team start time in each block when start times and bib numbers are assigned (about 10 days prior to the event). Racers that are registered for Sunday will not be moved to Saturday with a team, or vice versa.

Team times are NOT determined by the captains start time. Team members will be grouped together within each block (Elite, Morning OR Afternoon), based on the preferred time that the majority of team members in that block choose.

Racers that are registered for Elite or Morning start times will NOT be grouped with racers in the Afternoon start times or vice versa.

For more detailed team information please see 2015: Team Registration and Start Times.
